8 feared dead, 3 arrested in Igarra twin bank robbery
Dynamites were not in short supply during the execution of the twin bank robbery that took place simultaneously in Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo local government council yesterday.
The town hosted several members of dreaded armed gangs who held the community hostage for over 3 hours after blocking the major entrance to the town and sacked the police divisional headquarters.
Unity Bank of Nigeria and Keystone Bank was their target. They were badly battered and damaged during the siege. They operated blocking Okpe junction, Ososo junction in Ufa quarters and other major entrance to the town and the operation began at about 4pm on Tuesday.
Locals took refuge in caves. An 85 years old woman spoke to our correspondent during the gunfire under her bed. Others to undisclosed locations. The town was a ghost of itself; the silence of the grave yard.
Both Banks were directly adjacent to each other. While unconfirmed sources say Unity Bank lost one of its security guard on duty, it was not certain if Keystone Bank lost any official. However, they gained unfettered entrance into Unity Bank, it was learnt.
During the gunfire fire and the free flow of dynamites, six persons were fear dead including the Bank security. It was not immediately clear if more casualties have been recorded. The commando-style operation is the second in its series in Igarra in recent history.
After their successful operation, and on their way out of the town through Igarra-Ewan-Ojah-Ososo road, they were heard chanting ‘alahuwakubar’ throughout the period. Some in resemblance of Hausa-Fulani, others were described as Igbira boys. They freely walked along the township road; Momodu Ajayi road brandishing different sophisticated weapons and shooting indiscriminately. Some innocent souls were fell.
However, luck ran down on them. Police had laid siege at some strategic exit points to Ibillo, Okpe, Ososo and Auchi. However, as they maneuvered to link Okene through Igarra-Ewan-Ojah-Ososo road, police over-powered them after a gun-duel.
Unconfirmed sources say the police killed one and arrested three in the encounter and have been brought to the Igarra police divisional headquarters where a huge crowd of people gathered to have a glimpse of the dare-devil-terrorists.
