Amid Intense Criticism, NASS Creates Salary And Allowance Review Committee

Senator Bukola Saraki

On Tuesday, Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, disclosed that the Senate has not yet established a Committee that reviews the salaries and allowances of lawmakers.

Saraki said that this purposeful Committee was established to examine the structure thus far and review the members’ willingness to expose their pay to make sure that what is budgeted lines up with salaries given the economic situation.

Saraki said that his meeting with officials of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission as well as the setup of the Committee was a direct address to the controversies highlighted in the media concerning the earnings of lawmakers.

Saraki said, “In the last few days, there have been different reports on allowances for the National Assembly members. The clear issues that agitate the minds of the people are the government revenues, the current fiscal crisis in many of our States, the unsustainable cost of governance in the country and the rising cost of doing business in Nigeria.”

He then declared that the committee would be composed of 18 senators: the Senators for each each geopolitical zone would work together to develop a legislative itinerary for the 8th senate.

The expected first drafts of the Committee’s agenda will be place on the Senate floor for discussion and approval.

All these efforts are to guarantee that citizens of Nigeria receive an accurate, non-polluted display of the earnings of their legislators.
