The crunchy economic situation in the country is taking its toll; a pensioner, simply known as Mr. Sunny has been confirmed dead. According to an eyewitness account, he was found dead at about 1pm on Tuesday at the premises of Oredo Local Government Council, in Edo State.
The deceased, who was at the council premises for the ongoing screening for workers and pensioners in the council, was said to have used another persons phone to call a relative of his and communicated his uncomfortable condition and need for him to come to his aid, while waiting for this relative to arrive his health degenerated and he was seen foaming from the mouth.
During the confusion that ensued, the PHC Director of the council, DR. Eseh was called upon to rescue the situation, but after examining him, he confirmed the pensioner dead. The deceased has since been embalmed.
It will be recalled that Oredo council workers are being owed 5 months salaries, but it could not be ascertained how many months pensioners are being owed.
However, the National Pension Commission says all employees in the public service in the federation, federal capital territory and states that have implemented the Contributory Pension Scheme as well as private sector that, it is their right to have life insurance policy taken on their behalf by their employers for an insured amount of not less than three times their annual total emolument.
