AN operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC has been arrested in Enugu for allegedly being in possession of a revolver which he claimed was purchased illegally from the driver of his Commandant at the cost of N8,600.
Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement said the officer was arrested on Sunday by operatives of No 3 Police Mobile Force Enugu State command on stop and search around Amodu Awkunanaw.
He said: “The suspect (names withheld) of Achara Amodu, Awkunanaw, in Enugu State, was arrested for allegedly being in possession of a locally made chief revolver pistol which was concealed in his track suit shirt.
“It was gathered that suspect who was being conveyed with a motorcycle bike along the said road on seeing the stop and search operatives turned his bike and dropped suspect who boldly tried to walk pass the point with a faze cap with an emblem and inscription suspected to be that of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
“Upon interrogation for further proof of his identity as he was not in full regalia and considering how the motorbike dropped him and turned back as it gave room for suspicion, he was searched and a locally made chief revolver pistol was found on him.
“Suspect, on his own part, has maintained that he is a member of Civil Defence Corps serving in Calabar command and that he bought the locally made pistol from his commandant’s driver at the sum of N8,600 and that he uses the gun for his own private security guard.
“He, however, ended by pleading for forgiveness as he maintained that he was not permitted to be in possession of the gun since it was not officially issued to him,” the PPRO said.
He also said six suspected cultists were arrested recently at different parts of the state and were already being interrogated.
