Benin City – Wife of Edo State Governor, Mrs. Iara Oshiomhole gas called on women to avail themselves with necessary skills and training needed to empower themselves and resist the temptation of being dependent on their male counterparts.

Mrs. Oshiomhole made the call at the opening ceremony of a summit on women entitled: “Women Empowerment for Sustainable Development in Edo State’’ organised by Edo National Association World-Wide [ENAW] in collaboration with the Ministry Of Women Affairs and Social Development.

Represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Emergency, Hajiya Maimuna Momodu, Mrs. Oshiomhole noted that the summit was coming at a time when the realities of economic challenges in the country are at a critical period.

“Empowerment programmes enable us to identify some clear practical steps, and how to adhere to these steps, taking realistic steps to make a better life for every individual in this program which would ultimately impact on our women, children and home”

Mrs. Oshiomhole while urging the women to build practical skills and confidence through formal and informal education assured them of State Government’s continuous commitment to all encompassing women friendly projects and programmes.

Similarly, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Aanena Jemitola said the summit had become imperative as a result of yet to be fully expanded economic base to create an economic framework that would accommodate and liberate the women from the traditional male dominance.

She urged women to make themselves available to be intellectually liberated and do away with timidity to enable them develop informed and enlightened minds.

Earlier in a remark, the Conveyer and Coordinator, Edo National Association World-Wide (ENAW) Mrs. Stella Isa explained that the need to have a firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing women as well as educate and empower them to take their rightful position in the society necessitated the conveying of the summit.
