Edo IDP Camp comes alive, as Iara Oshiomhole flags off Skills acquisition programme
Joy and hope flowed today uncontrollably at the International Christian center, Uhogua, Venue of the Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camp when the Edo State Governor’s wife, Iara Oshiomhole officially flagged off the first phase of a 10-day skills acquisition programme for 160 students at the camp.
The venue came alive and agog with several activities such as football, volleyball, table tennis, among other sporting activities.
The Governor’s wife who personally inspected and participated in the second-day training to mark the flag-off expressed satisfaction at the rate the trainees were learning fast, just as she promised to donate all the training facilities to the camp for usage.
She inspected students undergoing training for fish farming, food production and packaging, creative arts and tailoring, ICT Basic computer training and thereafter kick-off the Comrade FC and Project Focus FC novelty match.
According to Mrs. Iara Oshiomhole, “I believe that there is need for determined effort by all to support them with the means, skills and resources that will enable them to reintegrate back into the wider society”.
“It is hoped that at the completion of the training program, beneficiaries would have been well equipped to provide services to people within and outside the camp, thereby making them self-reliant. In addition, they can also serve as resource persons to train others in the camp”.
“Finally, I congratulate all the participants in this program and urge you to take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity by paying adequate attention to the various aspects of the programme. Ultimately, you stand a good chance of not only living good and productive lives inside the camp but also be employees of labour outside the camp when peace eventually returns to the North-East”, she said.
In his opening speech, the Executive Director, Projects & Programmes (Office of Her Excellency) Mr. Fred Omo-Osagie said, “the Inaugural PROJECT FOCUS was to empower 36 young individuals in various skill acquisition programme including Fish Farming, Cake Baking and Events Planning & Decoration. We currently have our “PROJECT FOCUS 36” Ambassadors working with the facilitators and we are very proud of them”.
In a vote of thanks, the camp coordinator, Pastor Solomon Olorunsho thanked Edo State Government and called on other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate this kind gesture, adding that any investment or seed sown on the IDP’s was not a wasted one.
