Gunmen operating along the creeks of the Niger Delta, in the early hours of Saturday launched a daring attack on a military check-point, killing four soldiers and a mobile policeman attached to the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Pulo Shield before disappearing to the waterways.
The men who came in three speed boats also made away with arms and ammunition stationed at the check-point and two military gunboats.
The audacious attack on the Joint Military Task Force base at Ogbolomabiri in Nembe local government area of Bayelsa state caught the military men napping as the gunmen had stormed the area in a guerrilla fashion.
The gunmen who are suspected to be desirous in re-igniting militancy in the Niger Delta took pains to ransack the base, carted away rifles and ammunition of the task force including two gunboats.
The men were said to be unhurried as the operation took one hour.
