In a bid to prepare the ground for the flagging off of the training of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Uhogua, Edo State, the wife of Edo State Governor, Iara Oshiomhole on Friday introduced the facilitators to the Director, Pastor Solomon Folorunsho and the students/trainees.
The initiator of “We Care Trust’s Project Focus”, Mrs. Iara Oshiomhole who arrived the venue of the event with sewing machines, laptops, cooking machines, among other training facilities said this programme which will be flagged off on Tuesday 5th April, 2016, is specially designed for the children in the camp to acquire some skills during the holiday period.
A statement from the office of the Executive Director, Media and Public Affairs, Governor’s Office said, “in this first phase of the 10-day training, about 160 students would be involved, and 20 laptop computers, 20 sewing machines, and 20 cooking machines would be deplored for the training and subsequently managed by the Camp Director.
“The training will feature basic ICT skills such as MS, Word, Excel, Computer appreciation, and introduction to the internet. In the creative arts, there would be basic tailoring, bag making, shoes and sandals. There would be fish farming, snail farming and vegetable farming and lastly there would be creative and food processing while other available IDPs not participating in the training would be involved in sporting activities”.
According to Mrs. Oshiomhole, “I am here with the facilitators who will teach you creative learning, fish farming among others to quickly equip the children here. We are doing this empowerment so that one day when Nigeria is peaceful, and when these children choose to return back to their various states, they will be confident and empowered”.
Mrs. Oshiomhole who appreciated the effort of President Muhamadu Buhari for restoring peace in the country said, “we are fully aware of the circumstances in the North and we pray that the North East of Nigeria will be peaceful again”.
The Governor’s wife who was accompanied by Hon. Elizabeth Ativie described the training as “awesome”. According to Hon. Ativie, “this is awesome. I am overwhelmed for what I have seen. This is the only IDP center where there is a strategic plan for the Internally Displaced Persons so that they can be empowered such that when they leave this camp, they will be better than when they came to the camp.
“It is better to equip a young man but what I see in other camps, people just drop money, food, clothes but that is not enough. But this is preparing the children, and women, such that when they leave here they can fend for themselves. What is more important is this empowerment and that is what Iara Oshiomhole is doing and I am very impressed, I will report this back to the House of Assembly”.
In his response, the Camp Director, Mr. Solomon Folorunsho said, “this is wonderful. Infact, this is wonderful and this response to the plight of the needy and imparting into their lives. We thank Iara Oshiomhole and the Governor for all the wonderful works they have been doing and for bringing these materials to come and equip these children, so that they can be useful in their future endeavours”.
Mr. Folorunsho further said, “I will really want the Federal Government to be much more on ground by providing things like this in the IDP center and encourage those not in the IDP center to come out and join the center so that the government can identify them and also give them same help we are getting”.
“Infact, this is one of the best IDP centers, if not the best in Nigeria and with the way we have managed this place we are sure if others are managed like this we are sure they will be happy. Infact, you see the way this people are happy; you can see this people here have since forgotten their sorrows”.
“These IDPs here are very intelligent. Infact you need to see how they read their books, these people you see here love to work, they are really willing to learn and they have what it takes to become who they what to be”.
