Ogun State police command has arrested 40 years old Emeka Obi for allegedly kidnapping a nonagenarian, Iposiola Samaiye.
The state Police Commissioner, Valentine Ntomchukwu, who paraded the suspect yesterday, said Obi and members of his gang had kidnapped Pa Samaiye from his home at Ijebu-Esure last Thursday, and demanded a ransom of N20 million.
The police boss said his men, however, tracked down the suspect inside the forest where they held their victim captive, while his partner, identified as Prince, escaped.
He said: “They held the 97-year-old man inside the bush without food for four days. But our men, through tracking between 3am and 5am this morning (Tuesday), were able to arrest them and set the old man free.”
Pa Samaiye is currently receiving medical attention at a private hospital in Ijebu Ode.
His son, Obafemi, who spoke to newsmen at the hospital, said the kidnappers had demanded N20 million ransom, which was negotiated downward first to 10 million and later N1 million.
He said: “The kidnappers first demanded for N20 million, later it was negotiated to N10 million and later N1million. But we did not pay any ransom before my father was freed by the policemen.”
Ntomchukwu warned kidnappers, cultists and other criminal-minded individuals to leave the state, stressing that they would be smoked out to face the full weight of the law, should they fail to heed his warning.
Speaking with newsmen, the suspect, who is a member of kidnapping syndicate operating in Ijebu axis, said his accomplice, Prince, had gone into hiding.
