AS controversies continue to trail the Federal Government’s appointment of new vice chancellors for 13 universities, including the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Otuoke, Professor Bolaji Aluko, has said that he was not sacked and that his tenure will expire today.

In a statement, yesterday, Professor Aluko said that from the day he was appointed as vice chancellor of the university, he knew his that tenure will terminate today, February 15, 2016 and that he has cleared his desk in readiness for his successor.

Besides, he disclosed that he and eight other Vice chancellors affected by the current appointments were appointed the same day with their tenure expected to terminate today.

Professor Aluko attached a letter from the Federal Ministry of Education on his appointment for a single term and a letter dated February 4, 2016 from the National Universities Commission, NUC to eight Pro-chancellors of the universities (Dutse, Dutsin-Ma, Kashere, Lafia, Lokoja, Ndufu-Alike, Otuoke and Wukari) ‘’re-confirming the date of expiration of tenure of their Vice-Chancellors, and appropriately instructing each of them about the proper handing-over to an Acting Vice-Chancellor by the current VC in order to avoid any vacuum in power within the universities.’’

He also attached a letter that made the previous referenced letter necessary, that is a letter (dated 19 November, 2015) to the same eight Pro-Chancellors asking for the suspension of the due-process appointment of new Vice-Chancellors in their Universities, a process that began with newspaper advertisements.

His statement read in part: ‘’My last official day is therefore Monday, February 15, 2016, which I have known from Day One, which I have never sought to change. In fact, at this time, I have cleared out my desk in readiness for a new Vice-Chancellor.”
