ASABA—DELTA State governor-elect, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has assured Deltans that he will run the affairs of the state as a detribalised Deltan, saying he had put the pre-election issues behind him.
Okowa also appealed to Deltans to exercise patience with his incoming administration, taking cognisance of the huge problems facing the country.
The governor-elect, who played host to political leaders of Warri-Ijaw from Warri North, Warri South and Warri South-West Local Government Areas, said: “I must thank you and assure you that Delta State is for us all. I will not resort to the issue of ethnicity that played out in the primaries.
“Ijaw people supported my candidacy, so I decided to choose an Ijaw man of Warri as my running mate. I was led by God before I chose him and I don’t regret picking him because the Ijaws of Warri have done well.
“Let us all continue to think of Delta State as a whole always. We are coming in at a time of huge burden but God will help us because he will not send us out for nothing. This is a tough time but God will do it for us. People should be patient with us but we will remain committed to our electoral promises. We may not be the best but it would have been worse if an inexperienced person was chosen.”
Earlier, Chief Dan Ekpebide, said: “We are here to say you have done well. We thank you for choosing our son as your deputy despite the vast majority of qualified Deltans. We didn’t want to wait too long to come. We know your works and are aware of the role you played in resolving the Warri crisis. We know your contributions along with James Ibori.
“We are happy today because Ibori saved the situation. We want you to know that some of the issues are still there.”
Leader of the delegation, Bosin Ebikeme, assured Okowa of the support of the Ijaw people and promised to always be behind the government in ensuring a peaceful state.
