Edo State Government yesterday dismissed a media report in Vanguard Newspaper over alleged tension in the state saying, the state is the most peaceful in the geo-political zone, a statement endorsed by the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. John Mayaki said.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole while presenting his last budget for his send term administration at the State House of Assembly on Monday said, “Edo state is the most peaceful in the geo-political zone. We have had to work hard to liaise with the police, state security service and other security agencies to ensure Edo State is not a safe haven for criminals.

“Mr. Speaker, everything considered, I believe our state is relatively the most peaceful or one of the most peaceful across the country”, the Governor said.

However, a statement by Mayaki said, the reported heightened tension in the state over alleged endorsement of a governorship aspirant in the 2016 election cannot cause tension in the state or in the party, the All Progressives Congress.

“Where is the tension in the party? What are the indicators of the reported heightened tension? Who is tensed up in the party? What type of tension? You see, let’s be careful what we report and feed the people with as newsmen so as not to plunge this state or this country into another avoidable crisis.

“If you say there is disaffection in the party, that is understandable but that would certainly not translate to tension. Disaffection is part of life itself and it should be expected.

“I want to call on all stakeholders to be calm in the build-up to 2016. Governor Adams Oshiomhole believes in contestation and consensus building. He is a democrat and advocate of One-Man, One-Vote. He propounded that slogan across the country and he is an exemplar. He encourages popular political participation and ensured decampees are given their rightful place in the party without necessarily blocking their chances of joining the party.

“The Governor means well for the state as evident in his good governance. This was the reason those who decamped from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC had to do so. We all have our rights as humans just as the Governor. Right to freedom of speech, association and right to vote and support a clear cause of conviction such as anti-corruption, open governance, and popular participation.

“Governor Oshiomhole cannot and should not be blackmailed to surrendering his fundamental human rights. Nobody should be deceived to expect the Governor to fold his arms and size his voice on who succeeds him. He certainly cannot be ambivalent on this issue.

“In addition, what should interest us most is that we are in a democracy and the Governor is not the party chairman neither will he be part of those to conduct the party primaries. He has no role, whatsoever. Why then should anybody be tensed up, if it is true there was tension?

“There is no known Governor in Nigeria, serving or ex—Governor who would not have interest in who succeeds him just as Presidents. Why is Oshiomhole’s own different? I want to urge everyone in the party who is interested in any position to go about it in a most peaceful manner and according to the party’s rules and regulations when there is time to do so”.
