The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo State has smashed a gang that specialised in stealing livestock.
The suspects were paraded before journalists at the Corps’ headquarters Alagbaka office, in Akure, the Ondo State Capital on Tuesday.
The suspected thieves are: Kayode Ogunmola (60), Taiwo Ogunmola (20), Kehinde Ogunmola (20), Isaac Stephen (22), and Ifeanyin Okonkwo (21).
State Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Mr. Kayode Balogun, said that the suspected thieves were in possession of thirteen already slaughtered goats at the time of arrest.
“Ten out of the goats were pregnant while one of it was in labour when it was slaughtered,” Balogun added.
He also revealed that the suspects were all arrested at No. 19, Fadeyi street, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
In the past few weeks, there had been repeated complaints from residents in the remote area of Akure over their livestock going missing.
One of the suspects, Isaac Stephen told a SaharaReporters correspondent that the group always operated at midnight and sold the goats at a cheaper rate to their customers.
“We usually attack streets where there are large flock of goats and we carry out our operation mostly at night.
“Many of the goats are sold at cheaper price for Chevon who always contact us daily for slaughtered goat,” he said.
Reports are indicating that the suspected thieves will be charged to a Magistrate Court with the jurisdiction for prosecution after a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, the Corps vowed to nip in the bud all criminal activities in Ondo state. They appealed to the public to expose suspected criminal activity in their vicinities.
