Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu: The Honeymooners

On one of their earliest dates – between Saturday and Monday penultimate week, Mr. Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) knew they were meant for each other – they had emerged candidates of their parties for the Edo 2016 governorship elections.

The soon-to-be Governor and the Career Pastor – that’s his calling – are currently in the mood of honeymoon; don’t you think so?

The ring, where they would crumble is being prepared but as it stands, they are eyeing themselves, they are weighing themselves and they are savoring their victories – respectively. But we may never get there – events unfolding suggest it would be one of the easiest elections in recent history as the APC may not have a challenger afterall.

Though this honeymoon is naturally designed to be a poor one – the type that shouldn’t last long – the umpire has a time table for how long they should frolic across political lines – and the bell would be rung for the final grumble – that seems to be a knock-out already.

Pastor may not get to enter the ring – but his supposed ring-mate, understands it’s going to be a short while, when the honeymoon would last – the more reason he not only  congratulated him, he also reminded him that during the post-honeymoon season, the campaigns should be issue-based.

I commend Pastor for signing into that ‘political treaty’ of issue-based campaigns, however, unofficially.

For me, this present ‘tour’ of the honeymooners offers the sufficient rare sight of husband-and-wife stand-ups on the same bill – pet peeves – and allow them to set the rules while vacationing at their luxury leisure.

But talking seriously, the chances of the PDP entering the ring in this election are pretty remote – she will go down as a party that miscalculated, taking decisions by mistake, and then shuffled off the stage in a pretty ignominious exit – thanks to Markarfi and Sherrif.

The divisions that has sent the PDP reeling and ignited heated ‘conversations’ are unlikely to heal easily even after the election – I hear Pastor voiced deepening exasperation over his likely failure already – getting twitchy and disembarking from the leisure tour!

Guess who gets the last laugh even before the date and without a grind?
