A Serving Permanent Secetary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service (names withheld) has been arrested by a special team of anti-Vice Squad of the State Police Command over alleged attempts to buy a newborn baby for N200,000.
The arrested Permanent Secetary, who is also a practicing Medical Doctor and proprietor of the Survival Hospital located at Igbogene community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the State,was arrested on Thursday following a complaint from the mother of the newborn baby.
Niger Delta Herald learnt that the 24 years old Mother of the newborn baby, Nnenna Lawrence, had gone to the hospital at Eight months into her pregnancy and attempted to secure the service of the Embattled Permanent Secetary for abortion.
It was further gathered that though the Doctor/Permanent Secretary declined due to the risk,but he was alleged to have offered to buy the baby if delivered with an offer of N200,000 for a female baby and the sum of N250,000 if it is Boy.
Niger Delta Herald also learnt that as a sign of proof of seriousness, the Permanent Secetary/Doctor gave the expectant mother the sum of N27,000 to seal the deal and for good feeding.
Trouble however started when the Eboyin Born24 years old Mother delivered a baby boy and had a change of mind to sell as agreed. She reportedly filed a complaint at the Igbogene Division of the Police after the hospital refuse to release the newborn baby to her.
However attempts to speak with the Permanent Secetary and the Management of the Survival Hospital failed.But a man,who claimed to be a medical worker at the hospital,denied the allegation of attempted buying of baby,”the Perm Sec or Doctor was only trying to help by taking the baby to the Welfare Department of the State.”
When asked why issue of money was involved,he declined comment.
When Contacted on the development,the Spokesman of the State Police Command,Asimin Butswat, confirmed the development and said investigation is ongoing to verify the claims of the Mother of the newly born baby.
According to Butswat,”On the 4/2/2016,at about 1000hrs, one Nnena Florence ‘f’ of Igbogene Community, reported to the Police, that she delivered a baby on the 3/2/2016, at Survival Hospital, Igbogene, Yenagoa.”
“She stated that prior to the delivery, she had arranged with the Doctor and the Nurse of the hospital to sell the baby to one woman now at large, at the sum of two hundred thousand Naira only, but upon delivery of the baby, she change her mind and refused to sell the baby as agreed. “
