Edo 2016: The Media must insist on professionalism, Oshiomhole’s aide
As political activism in Edo State gathers momentum, Edo State Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. Uwuilekhue Saturday Idehen yesterday, called on the Media to be watchful and insist on professionalism in news reportage and advertorials as we approach 2016 governorship election in the state.
The Commissioner who was reacting to an advertorial in the Vanguard Newspaper page 50, Monday, January 4, 2016 with headline, “Oshiomhole’s desperate plans to market his successor”, by a faceless group known as ‘Let the People Lead Vanguard’ said “when the media is used to feed the public with lies meant to instigate the people against the Government, the consequences could be very dire”.
Uwuilekhue who wondered how the advertorial “which is lacking in material facts and raked-up lies found its way into the pages of the newspaper”, said “the media need to do more by insisting that all the requirements needed for an advertorial to qualify for publication, in terms of integrity test, verifiable address and signatures should be mandatory, so as to maintain credibility and readership”.
According to him, “this said advert by this faceless group against the Comrade Governor of Edo State is not worth a reply because those who signed the worthless document are non-existent, let alone their claim as APC members without local government or ward. To worsen the whole issue, unfortunately, the advert has no identifiable official address.
“Assuming without conceding that the signatories are in flesh and blood, I challenge them to reveal their identity, local government, ward and declare party membership card before one can take their ranting seriously and offer them a dose of the reply that befits them.
“Of interest is their claim that they are lovers of democracy and as such will use every means legal to seek redress, including mass protest over why a Governor should show interest in who succeeds him, is to say the least.
“The question that readily comes to mind is; where were these timid, and faceless cowards when Peoples Democratic Party, the party of the godfather held Edo state spell-bound before Governor Oshiomhole came to our rescue? When Edo people needed them most, they had no gumption and temerity to bear their fathers’ name not even after the political space has been democratized by Oshiomhole are they bold to identify themselves.
“However, nobody should take the democratic attitude and character of the Comrade Governor for granted as party indiscipline would not be tolerated and anyone found to be involved in anti-party activities would be treated accordingly.
“Genuine party members have shown maturity and respect to the office of the Comrade Governor except reprobates. I want to call on all our peace loving party members in the state to remain calm and continue to support the Comrade Governor in delivering on his mandate while waiting for the party directives on any issue as it relates to governance and 2016 governorship election.”
