National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar are in a fierce battle for the chairmanship of the party’s Board of Trustees, which would be inaugurated on March 22nd in Abuja.
The APC, it was gathered, has operated without an official BoT since the fusion of the various political parties in 2014 that gave rise to the ruling party, even as the BoT members have been appointed.
National chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun said yesterday that the APC Board of Trustees would formally be inaugurated on March 22nd, quelling speculations that the party has been operating without a functional BoT.
The two candidates who have intensified lobbying for the BoT position are expected to meet with the national caucus of the party who would meet on March 21st to fine-tune modalities for the election of the chairman, Board of Trustees.
Oyegun also disclosed that the party has not been able to replace its former National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed because it has not been able to find a candidate that will fill the big vacuum his exit has left in the APC, adding that it is still searching for Lai Mohammed’s capable replacement. He said that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party would meet on March 24th when congresses would be conducted to fill all the vacant position that were created by the appointment of some of its NEC members to higher positions.
“The Board of Trustees will be meeting on the 22nd of March, the day before the national caucus will be meeting and the NEC of the party will be meeting on the 24th.
“The constitution provides the methodology for that and we have to have congresses all over in the interim to fill these vacancies and for Lai Mohammed’s replacement, since he left, we are still searching for a man of the performance level of Lai Mohammed. So, we are still looking for a candidate that can match the performance of Lai Mohammed”, Oyegun noted.
The APC national chairman, who defended the numerous foreign trips of the President, insisted that the president was using his trips to seek the way forward for Nigeria’s economic woes, adding that the recovery of the economy is still not at sight.
“I do not see that anybody can give you a date but very soon, the economy will bounce back. I have no doubts at all. The president knows what our national issues are; he knows that a lot of it has international connotations.
A group of the World is fighting to have the most highly industrialized. China wants cheap oil because it’s a manufacturing hub, India wants cheap oil and a lot of other countries want cheap oil which of course is contrary to our own interest because we want good prices for oil so that we can carry on with our own national development plans.
So, that is only a tip of the iceberg of what Mr President is doing, trying to talk to those who have an impact in rearranging the international economic realities to change some of the current dynamics that is making oil collapse in such a precipitate manner,” Oyegun stated.
