DR Oke Idawene is chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Delta State. In this interview, Idawene assess the past administration of Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State saying he was a misunderstood governor. He, however, advices President Muhammadu Buhari not to not scrap the amnesty scheme.
What is your assessment of President Buhari’s inaugural speech?
The speech was very touching and fair enough exactly what Nigerians want to hear at this present time. I urge him to do accordingly, we pray God gives him the will to do it.
Now that President Muhammadu Buhari has taken over the reins of power, what do you think should be his focus?
His major priority should be security, war against terror, that is Boko Haram, crimes and other security challenges, Stabilizing the economy, power, employment opportunities for the youths, He should not in any way take decisions out of sentiments that will make us lose confidence in him.
What do you think should be his agenda for the South South?
He should consolidate on the massive development of the South – South Region. He should be more friendly, get confidence from the South-South people and consult with former President Jonathan as at when necessary.
In your view, do you think he should scrap the amnesty programme?
No. he should not scrap the amnesty scheme. Rather, he should make it better, more efficient and acceptable to all. But if he insists on scraping it, he should offer something better than the amnesty programme.
How do you see your party, the SDP, faring in the Delta State House of Assembly?
The Social Democratic Party has men of impeccable character, tested and trusted in persons of Hon. Ofobruku and Hon. Abigor. I want you to know that the SDP will soar in the 6th assembly of Delta State. The people of Delta State should watch out for us.
How would you assess the administration of Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan?
Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan was the most misunderstood governor in Nigeria. His three point agenda; namely peace and security, human capital development and infrastructural development was a good one. I score him 70 per cent in all. The SDP wish him well.
What should be the focus of governor Ifeanyi Okowa for the state and how do you think he can succeed?
Governor Okowa should consolidate on democratic dividends by completing all on-going capital projects and also design new ones.
The infrastructural development of Delta State should be his focus apart from creating jobs, business friendly environments to attract investors within and outside Nigeria.
He should run an all inclusive government. He has no excuse to fail, SDP wish him well and ready to support his leadership at any capacity, we shall excel in Delta State, Prosperity to all. We welcome Okowa on board.
