Palpable fear has gripped residents of Owerri metropolis and the adjoining communities, following the increasing sordid activities of dare devil armed hoodlums that are reportedly on rampage in the city.
Only Friday, Mr. Lawrence, who is a contract staff with Vanguard Media Limited, was attacked and robbed in Owerri. Narrating his ordeal to Vanguard, Mr. Lawrence said the armed robbers struck as soon as he alighted from his vehicle at the Vanguard Regional Office.
“My assistant and I arrived 5 Rotibi Street, Owerri, a multi-storey building that houses Vanguard and other national newspapers, at about 4.45a.m yesterday. We were about off-loading the papers when the robbers struck”, Lawrence said.
According to the driver, “the robbers collected all the money we had, as well as our telephone handsets before disappearing from the scene”.
The driver expressed shock that the robbers were not worried that some people were already walking along the street as they operated unhindered.
“I do not know what Owerri is turning into. We used to see Owerri as peaceful and clean but I can no longer say the same thing of the city today”, Lawrence said.
Vanguard recalls that cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, bag snatching and other serious crimes are now on the increase in Imo State.
