Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has charged residents of the state to desist from practices that are dangerous to the environment and physical infrastructure.
A statement signed by the Executive Director, Media and Public Affairs, Governor’s office, Mr. John Mayaki said the attitude of the people could frustrate the goodwill of the Comrade Governor in his quest to do more.
Mayaki said last Sunday, Governor Oshiomhole embarked on a road inspection tour at Aduwawa, where he condemned the attitude of residents who litter the metropolis with wastes, adding that such practices undermine the developmental efforts of the state.
The governor said on getting to New Benin Market, he was shocked by the level of wastes that littered the environment, adding that such attitude to waste was unacceptable in the 21stcentury.
“What I saw (at New Benin Market), made me feel sick. The amount of waste that people dump on the road and side by side was alarming. As they smile shouting Oshobaba, I am forced to smile but there is huge pain in my heart that people can be doing this thing every day. How much do we have to spend to build roads and then we have to spend money again to recruit people to clean and to evacuate waste?” he quizzed.
Oshiomhole stated that such attitude to waste poses health hazards to the people, saying it constitutes a drain to the state’s resources.
He noted that it was painful when government commits huge resources and investments in developing infrastructure while residents misuse the facilities and create environmental problems for the state.
