The coordinator Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO) in Niger state, Alhaji Akilu Kuta, has observed that the only way to end youth restiveness is for government to create jobs for youths, particularly the graduates roaming the streets.
When jobs are created with social amenities such as electricity and pipe borne water in rural areas, the problem of youth restiveness across the country will not only be a thing of the past but reduce congestion in cities due to over population.
Kuta blamed over population in cities which has led to piles of refuse and dump sites and slums causing air pollution and overstretching of existing social amenities on the failure of government to open up more access road to rural areas to discourage rural-urban migration.
Speaking to newsmen on the activities of the organization in the state and across Nigeria generally, Alhaji Kuta said Nigerian youths as future leaders are the hope of tomorrow and as such should not be toyed with.
“We are calling on the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to check youth restiveness across the country by providing employment opportunities and social support for them to become gainfully employed but to create jobs and employ their fellow youths”.
YESSO, according to him is a project initiated by the Federal Government to increase, particularly the poor among Nigerian citizens, access to employment opportunities, social services and also strengthen safety net system in the country and expressed regrets that little or no attention is being paid towards using the platform in actualizing this objective.
The support operations which is in line with the federal government’s and the World Bank’s commitments towards poverty reduction among the youth is being implemented at the federal and state levels, he said.
Notwithstanding the challenges, Kuta said the YESSO operations were being implemented in collaboration with some Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Local Government Councils and as well, some communities across Niger state.
While calling on the new administration at the federal, state and local government level to pay desired attention to issues bothering on proper engagement of youths, Kuta said he is optimistic that the project would make the country a leading country in terms of social protection, job creation and productivity which will in the long run translates to wealth creation.
